Action as Fireman put out the fire in Tamworth Town Centre

On Wednesday May 5th, 2010 as everyone was driving home the Tamworth sky filled up rapidly with black smoke. Drivers were diverted away from the town, those on foot were redirected by Police away from the now disused shopping centre.

Opposite Victoria Mews the street was alive with fire crew from Lichfield station, police cars plus a crowd which came out of their home’s to see the commotion. Red and blue flashing lights, mingled with the dark black smoke, whilst hose pipes were unravelled down past the vets and Tamworth spiritualist church towards unused garages round the back of Bennetts taxis.

A Tamworth Police Officer at the scene said:

”Were re diverting everyone away from back of bennettes taxi’s, asking them to go around past the bingo and trinity nightclub and enter the town that direction. There’s a fire in one of the garages. At this time don’t know how it started.”

No ambulances were on the scene, so thankfully nobody was hurt.

By 7-30pm, the fire was out and made safe. Traffic was then allowed to pass by.
