Have your say on new dog regulations

New powers which will make it easier to keep the borough clean and support responsible dog owners are being considered by Tamworth Borough Council.

The authority is asking the public for their opinion on four new Dog Control Orders which could be introduced across the borough in summer 2012.

The four orders are:

  • The dog fouling order, which would apply across the borough and would give enforcement staff the powers to impose £80 on-the-spot fines on dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets
  • Exclusion of all dogs from designated areas. This would NOT ban dogs from public parks, but would apply to all fenced children’s play areas and small designated areas in open parks where there is play equipment
  • Keeping of dogs on leads. This would apply in a number of areas including cemeteries, the Upper and Lower Lawns in the Castle Grounds and Anker Valley sports pitches.
  • Keeping of dog under control when directed. This would be in force across the borough and would be used if a dog was out of control or causing a nuisance

A breach of any of the four orders could land the irresponsible dog owner with an on-the-spot fine of £80.

Members of the public are now being asked for their views on the proposed orders. The full details of the areas proposed can be viewed here and there is also the option to complete a survey on the plans.

The introduction of the Dog Control Orders will bring a number of benefits, including the creation of a cleaner environment, reduction of health problems associated with dog faeces and the promotion of responsible dog ownership.

Anyone who would like to look at the proposals for the Dog Control Orders or comment on them has until February 28 2012 to do so.

Feedback and comments will then be used to add to or amend the orders. The proposed Dog Control Orders would then have to go back to the council’s Cabinet for final approval before being implemented.
